Everyone knows that planning a wedding can be very stressful, especially for the bride. There’s always something to do or plan, and it can be overwhelming at times. You may think that adding one more thing into the mix sounds crazy, but let me give you some thoughts about how exercise may be just the thing you need.
Exercise, even a little bit, can reduce stress levels. Exercise has been shown to decrease the stress hormones (cortisol) and increase ‘happy’ chemicals (endorphins). It has also been linked to lowering our negative reactions to stressful situations. That means that when the pressure hits to get those last minute details worked out, you’re going to cope with it much better than your non-exercising former self!
Exercise can also be a much needed distraction from a busy day. Planning a wedding takes a lot of time and energy, but most of it is cerebral (making phone calls, writing invitations) – and that’s on top of your normal work day. Getting up and being physical can be the change and distraction you need to feel refreshed and ready to get back into the game.
Now let’s talk about the way it makes us look! I’ve never met a bride that doesn’t want to look her very best on her wedding day. Exercising is the only way you’re going to tone your body, burn calories and look your best on your wedding day. Think about the confidence you will have walking down the aisle knowing you look your absolute best!
Good news – you don’t have to spend hours in the gym to gain these benefits of exercise. In fact, you don’t have to go to the gym at all. You can exercise in the convenience of your home with little or no equipment. Start slow, pick an activity you enjoy, stay consistent and don’t force unrealistic expectations on yourself. One suggestion I give clients is to pick up a few exercise DVD’s. They’re great because there’s an endless supply to choose from so you won’t get bored. You can do them any time of the day or night and you’ll get a great workout from them.
If you’re feeling stressed about all of your wedding preparations, get up and move a little. See how you feel after a little exercise, you may find it’s just what you needed!
