1. Be realistic and start where you’re at. By that I mean don’t go from a couch potato to a marathon runner in one weekend. A good start for beginners is to focus on getting more physical activity in your day. Wear a pedometer and set some a goal to increase your steps. You should work your way up to average 10,000 steps per day. Remember that anytime you’re up and moving, you’re burning calories, so every little bit helps.
If you’re wedding is soon, add a couple of 10 minute brisk walks to your day.
2. Use a workout and nutrition log. Free online versions are available and they’re a great tool. You can plug in your info to find out roughly how many calories you need, how many you’re consuming and how active you are on a daily basis. Some even have an analysis that will tell you if you’re eating a balanced diet and burning enough calories to lose weight. This isn’t something you need to do forever, but it will help to set you on the right track. Go to fitday.com or caloriecount.about.com for an online version.
3. Invest in a couple of fun exercise DVD’s. They’re a wonderful, fun and inexpensive way to get exercise. There are an endless number of exercise videos to choose from at your local store (such as Wal Mart or Target).
4. Hire a professional, even for a short time to get you on track and set some specific goals. A professional fitness trainer or dietitian can be an enormous help in reaching your goals. We offer at home personal training and you can sign up for as few as 4 – 30 minute sessions.
5. Have fun – find something you enjoy. If you like to be outside, don’t get on a treadmill for your workout. Go outside and take a walk!
